Musical Director
Julian Bigg is firmly established as one of the most versatile conductors of his generation, reflected by his expanding reputation across a wide range of musical activities in Great Britain, Europe, South America, Australia and Asia, in concert, theatre, radio and television and in the recording studio.
After graduating from the Royal Academy of Music in 1983, Julian Bigg began his career with the world premier recording of the Shostakovich Chamber Symphonies with the Phoenix Chamber Orchestra, of which he was the founder. Among other accolades, the recording won the Record of the Month award form both The Sunday Times and The Guardian, and, 17 years on, remains widely recommended. In 1991, the release of a series of recordings of opera excerpts with the Czech Symphony Orchestra won Classical Music Magazine’s Record of the Year.
His debut in the theatre led to his appointment as Musical Director of the London production of Les Misérables, which he also worked on in Paris, Amsterdam and Copenhagen. Subsequently he has held the position of Musical Director on the other three most successful musicals of all time; The Phantom of the Opera, Sunset Boulevard and Miss Saigon. He was also Musical Director of the BBC’s annual Christmas extravaganza Joy to the World at the Royal Albert Hall.
Julian was the Musical Director and Supervisor for the official VE Day and VJ Day Commemorations in Hyde Park, both in the presence of HM The Queen in front of a live audience of a quarter of a million and televised worldwide. He was also Musical Supervisor for HM The Queen’s 40th Anniversary at Earl’s Court and The Golden Wedding Anniversary celebrations at Windsor Great Park.
Julian has conducted The Philharmonic, The Royal Philharmonic, The BBC Concert, The Academy of St. Martin’s, The Ulster Orchestra, The Royal Liverpool Philharmonic, The Guildford Philharmonic, The West Australia Symphony, The Orquestra Sinfonica de Venezuela, The Czech Symphony and The Bangkok Symphony, as well as Birmingham Royal Ballet and West Australian Ballet.
Julian is currently Founder and Principal Conductor of The Czech Pops Orchestra, and Principal Guest Conductor of The Gran Mariscal Symphony Orchestra in Venezuela.
